GO CHANGE THE WORLD
LYRICS
2006 Carlene A. Thissen

Where did I go? What did I do?
Did I get lost? Are you here too?

When I see through my eyes, hear through my ears
I remember the way I felt in those years.
Who do I see? Her hair is gray
Could it be me some future day?
When she speaks to me what does she say?

REFRAIN – (She says) Go change the world, it’s not too late.
Age doesn’t matter – it’s a brand new day
But time matters – start today.

VERSE 2
I can’t stay there, I must live here
And find my way, That much is clear

I see the truth, forget your age
Don’t worry about youth. This is your stage.
Who will know peace, because you exist?
Who will sleep easier because you lived?
Do what comes easy- use your gifts.

REFRAIN - Go change the world, it’s not too late.
Age doesn’t matter – it’s a brand new day
But time matters – start today.

KEY CHANGE TO D

Where are we now? What can we do?
Just watch for signs Then follow through.

The garden still blooms like it did back then
Christmas lights strung through trees glow again
If we just follow signs, we’ll know the way
Age doesn’t matter – it’s a brand new day.
But time matters – start today.

REFRAIN - Go change the world, it’s not too late.
Age doesn’t matter – it’s a brand new day
But time matters – start today.

Long Song Description:
Long description: Go Change the World is a look back and a look forward for this baby boomer whose dreams of changing the world during the Woodstock era dissolved into "the establishment." Years later, she looks back but also looks ahead and listens to what her future self has to say to her self today. The message from the future self is, "Go change the world, it's not too late." The song is a beacon of hope that it is not too late for any of us to do our part to change the world. Age doesn't matter - it's a brand new day. Time, however, is a different story so it's important to start now. We don't know how much time we have left, but every morning we wake up is a brand new day.
Story Behind the Song:
Story behind the song: Go Change the World started out to be the story of a hippie idealist looking sadly at lost dreams and the perception of a wasted life. As I worked on it, however, the song reinvented itself into a lively, spirited and hope-filled challenge to all generations. Part of the lyrics, the older self looking back at the self today, came from a meditation exercise in a book by Gloria Steinem, Revolution From Within, so meaningful to me that I have never forgotten it. In my search for inspiration for the melody I played with arpeggio combinations on the piano and revisited my old folk albums from the 1960s and 70s. One one such album cover, Joan Baez in Concert, I found this quote: "Each (folk) singer draws his songs out of the deep well, and in so doing has both found and made a personal statement." Go Change the World is my personal statement, calling to everyone in every generation that the world is badly in need of our help and that we are NOT too old. The only caveat is that some of us could run out of time before we get going, so the main theme is, "Age doesn't matter, it's a brand new day, but time matters: start today!"
